"Dyaspora" By Joanne Hyppolite

Celebrating Black History Month

What is cultural identity?
- Cultural identity is the identity of a group or culture, or of an individual as far as one is influenced by one's belonging to a group of culture.

In the essay "DYASPORA" by Joanne Hyppolite, Hyppolite talks about how she goes to America. Hyppolite mentions things they would do in Haiti, and the things they do in America. Haitian parents do not know about something's in america, they're not familiar with water, they don't know about racism. Since haitians go to school they lose their accent, learn about other countries except Black Americans. Her and other haitian girls are not invited to parties of white girls. Her parents talk in Kreyol and she responds in English. When her parents speak English she finds it weird. She has to get used to both cultures because her parents are Haitians and they're living in America. It's probably difficult for her since they are two different cultures and she does different things in school than what she does at home, And they celebrate different things. As she gets older things change, she already knows where Haiti is now, and she does not represent Haiti to all of the people in high school anymore.
